Cups tarot card meanings

What the Cups suit means

Cups are the suit of feelings, relationships, intuition, and care. Each Rider-Waite-Smith card shows one or more cups, often near water. The suit is linked with the element of Water. Cups tend to appear in questions about love, friendship, family, emotional needs, and how you respond to what you feel.

Several Cups in one reading can suggest that emotions are the center of the question. Ask what you feel, what you need, and whether those feelings are being expressed or held back.

How the Cups cards progress

The Ace is an opening of feeling. The Two is mutual connection, and the Three is shared celebration. The Four and Five turn inward toward boredom or loss. The Six looks back with nostalgia, and the Seven offers many tempting options. The Eight walks away from something that no longer fits. The Nine is personal contentment, and the Ten is lasting emotional harmony.

The Cups court cards

Common questions

Do Cups always mean love?

No. Cups describe emotional life in general, which includes friendship, grief, creativity, and how you treat yourself. Romance is only one part of the suit.

What does a reversed Cups card mean?

A reversed Cups card often points to feelings that are blocked, private, or not yet understood. It is not always the opposite of the upright meaning. See how to read reversals.
